The other day, I was talking to an individual who specializes in laundry equipment. Specifically, he is a designer and manufacturer of washing machines and dryers. He has several very excellent designs, and some new innovative strategies to improve the efficiency in both the consumer market and for industrial washers and dryers. Anyway, we began discussing the use of washing machines in places where water supply was limited by drought, or location, as well as limited power supply.

Indeed, I mentioned that NASA had a new washing machine which worked off of microwaves, and that made more sense because of the limited water supply available. Now then, long term space travelers will need some way to wash their clothes, but they will not be able to use water. The clothes must be of durable nature so that they do not come apart after many washings, using whatever method is chosen. Right now we don't have such material, the material we do have which is ultra-strong is much stronger than human skin, thus, it will cause chafing, irritation, and rips or tears on the skin.

If we use the material that we normally use for the clothes that we wear, obviously those clothes will wear out early. If that clothing is going to wear out anyway, perhaps space colonists should go naked. A nude space colony you ask; yes, and I'm sure Richard Branson will love this idea, and perhaps even promote it with Virgin Galactic, his new private space company. Consider if you will that if space travelers take their wardrobe with them, well, that is a lot of extra weight, causing extra rocket fuel to lift that weight out of the gravity dwell, to reach escape velocity from Earth.

Therefore, either we need a gentle washing machine system, and specialized clothing, or we are going to have to ask those involved with long-term spaceflight, to boldly go, butt naked. Now then, you might be laughing, and it is rather funny when you think about it, but there may really be no way to solve this dilemma or hurdle this challenge. Perhaps, a very religious, tight laced devout engineer might work on this project and come up with a new innovation or solution, one which will be well within his or her belief system.

Still, the more I consider this challenge of coming up with a perfect washer and dryer system, one which is lightweight, very durable, and uses very little energy - it just seems to me that it might not be feasible at all. It might be much smarter to have future astronauts, and space colonists go nude. Please consider all this and think on it.
