Bees

Bees and their link with honey were the essential plot elements of the 2008 animated feature, Bee Movie, the first feature length movie which involved Jerry Seinfeld since the finale of the hit NBC sitcom, Seinfeld.

Telling the story of how a bee managed to sue human beings because of their consumption of honey, Bee Movie had been met with conflicting reviews upon its release, with some critics loathing it as others were just so-so and okay with it.

But critical acclaim and Hollywood box office hit ratings aside, Bee Movie did well in telling the essential roles bees have in the natural balance and ecologic cycle of nature, providing an in depth look at how much impact their making of honey has with the order of things.

Bees kept as “pets”

Many beekeepers don’t really consider bees as “pets”, not in the sense over how one would keep a dog or a cat as a pet.

For one, it is practically impossible to keep one bee as a pet, given that bees are instinctively social insects. This means that if you intend to keep bees, you will have to setup a space where a colony can thrive, with worker bees, a queen bee and everything else a colony requires.

The nice thing about keeping a colony of bees is that you don’t have to “feed” them since they can find and make their own food. In fact, you could even have a share of the honey which bees make, just make sure that you leave enough for the colony to survive.

There’s also the thing about bees and their stings, and it pays to have some working knowledge over the aggression levels of bees, especially when talking about keeping a colony. Keeping bees may appear to be easy, but their upkeep can be challenging, especially when they are kept in urban areas.

All in all, though bees are fascinating creatures to keep as “pets”, they’re not exactly as easy as having a cat or dog around in the house.

Iguanas

Iguanas, when talking about looks, typify the image of monsters, with fire breaths and sinister eyes.

Given its monstrous looks, there really isn’t much to wonder why Hollywood opted to use an iguana as the character base for its 1998 take on Godzilla, Japan’s ever-famous monster-creature franchise.
 Iguanas
First showing in 1954 in Japan, the 1998 Hollywood version of Godzilla starred Matthew Broderik, Jean Reno and Maria Pitillo and was directed by Roland Emmerich, featuring a re-take over the classic monster design of Godzilla, bearing similarities with iguanas.

However, far from their “monstrous looks”, iguanas are nothing like their ascribed looks would tell them to be.

In fact, they are generally the calmest of reptiles to have as pets.

Iguanas as Pets

Iguanas are doubtlessly one of the most popular types of lizards which are kept as pets, given the relative ease of their care.

For one, their feeding habits aren’t all that complicated to fulfill, and their tempers aren’t really all that foul, though they can be quite aggressive if not given proper care and attention.

Also, though many would think of them as venomous, iguanas are not venomous reptiles, though their bites, though rare when talking about bites inflicted on humans, can be painful as any bite can be.

In fact, in most pet iguana circles, the concern of Salmonella, found in the digestive tract in most reptiles, is ascribed to be the only major cause for concern when keeping iguanas, something which proper hygiene regimen can deal with and handle.

Bottom line, iguanas, though they appear to be sinister monsters, are nothing like the monster that Godzilla is.

Anaconda

Anaconda, the 1997 “creature-feature” starring Jennifer Lopez and Ice Cube, brought slews of moviegoers to theaters, telling the tale of how a National Geographic-type crew meets with the fabled giant Anacondas of the South American rainforests, face to face.

Though the anacondas in the movie remain to be mythical gigantic creatures, anacondas are among the largest snakes in the world, though the name actually refers to a group of snakes, typified by their constricting capacities.
Anaconda
They are quite popular in exotic pet circles, given their overall non-venomous status as snakes and given their relative composure when kept as pets.

When it comes to pet anacondas, most exotic pet owners are torn between getting a ball python or a green anaconda. Both are among the most commonly encountered types of anacondas, and understanding the differences between the two, though categorized as anacondas, helps identify which type is better to keep as a pet.

Ball Python Pet owners say – that their snakes are generally easier to keep compared to green anacondas, though having these type of snakes as pets is not without its problems too.

Depending on a particular snake’s temperament, ball pythons are quick, with cases of pet owners experiencing bites to the face when handling them. Though they are non-venomous, their bites are still painful to experience, and as with most bites, they could leave behind scars.

Some ball python pet owners confess that there are times when their pets, in the instances when they do get to bite them, just won’t let go, unlike other snake varieties which are quick to bite and quick to let go.

Green anaconda pet owners say – that if a challenge in handling a ball python’s temperament is encountered, green anacondas are more fickle and more difficult to keep.

Generally speaking, green anacondas are ideally kept by expert pet snake owners, who have better understanding and experience in dealing with snakes.

If you’re simply starting out in keeping a pet anaconda, smaller types like the ball python or the carpet python are highly advised by most expert and experienced anaconda pet owners.

Rats

Rats, being the titular characters of the 2007 blockbuster Ratatouille, were shone in a different light in the movie, featured as highly intelligent creatures, an attribute which has pegged them as one of the world’s most feared types of vermin.

As the world generally pegs them to be creatures to-do-away with, there are actually a number of folks out there who see rats as interesting creatures, with a number keeping them as exotic pets.
Rat
If you’re among those few who feel that there is more to rats than problems, here’s a quick take over what you need to know before bringing a rat into your life.

Rats – What to know before you keep one as a pet

In terms of life span rates, the average rat lives somewhere between two to three years, which doesn’t really make them great pets when “long term” pet keeping is being talked about. Also, they are nocturnal, which means that if you’re interested in keeping rats expecting them to be active and fun, the timing of their active hours may not fit well with yours.

The nifty thing about rats is that they are sociable animals, and having more than one is actually better than just having one. However, close watch over the activities of male and female rats should be done, since female rats are known to be in heat once in a four to five day cycle.

A population boom just may be ahead if you keep male and female rats in one enclosure.

But apart from their nocturnal and breeding habits, rats are quite entertaining to have as pets, highly intelligent and highly trainable too. They come in many varieties, not just in the traditional smoky grey coat, with certain species even sporting color patches of fur.

In terms of feeding, rats aren’t all that difficult to feed. Generally, any diet-type ideal for mammals fit well with rats, and cleaning their enclosures/cages aren’t all that difficult too.

When talking about where to get rats for petkeeping intentions, going to pet stores are highly advised, since the typical rat found in homes may have rabies and/or are carriers of dangerous diseases.

Other than watching over the possibility of a rat population boom, rats are quite fun to have as exotic pets, though they don’t necessarily have culinary skills that’s bring a food critic to his knees.

Tarantulas

The 1990 thriller Arachnophobia didn’t exactly have Tarantulas in its plot, but the movie did well in raising questions over the feasibility and practicality of keeping tarantulas as pets.

Directed by Frank Marshall, Arachnophobia’s main “actor” was a Venezuelan spider, a new species which spawned a new breed of spiders with highly lethal venom packed in their bites.
Tarantulas
Tarantulas, generally speaking, are not known for having bites which are lethal. It’s one of the reasons why they’re often kept as pets, along with their proliferation when bred in captivity.

When talking about tarantulas as pets, pet owners are not all that burdened by their upkeep, but as pets, tarantulas also have certain particulars and specifics in terms of care and maintenance.

For one, they live a long time, as old as 20 to 25 years, which means that keeping tarantulas as pets should be treated as a commitment. Another is that though tarantulas are generally docile, their appearance is threatening to most humans. The tendency to panic is only to be expected from people who encounter them, which could cause problems for tarantula pet owners, especially if a tarantula manages to get out from its enclosure.

Another thing is that most tarantulas prefer to eat live prey. If you’re the type who isn’t all that comfortable in feeding a pet something that’s still alive, a pet tarantula may not be best for you.

In terms of activity, tarantulas tend to be in constant repose. In other words, they don’t really do much, apart from feeding and/or when on the run. If you think that a tarantula does awesome things during “lounge times”, you’ll be disappointed to see a tarantula staying fixed in one spot, in one pose.

They may not be as venomous as Arachnophobia’s spiders, but their bites are also painful, which is one reality prospective pet tarantula owners should consider before getting one.

So? Think you’re up to the role of owning a pet tarantula?
